Autumn here in the Cotswolds is an absolutely gorgeous time of year. There’s a crisp feel in the air, fires in pubs are aglow and we know that the fun and festivities of Christmas are just around the corner.
With the glorious autumn colours visible throughout the area, now is the perfect time to head out on a brisk country walk to drink in the very best of this season. Here are a couple of our favourite destinations.
Broadway Tower
The Tower is an iconic landmark here in the Cotswolds, visible from miles around. It was created by architect James Wyatt following the vision of the great 18th century landscaper, Capability Brown. It features a quirky collection of architectural treats including turret and battlements as well as gargoyles and balconies. If you climb to the top of the tower, a clear day will provide you with wonderful views that take in seven different counties.
For an easy walk, visitors can enjoy the circular walk around the tower grounds that is approximately 1.2 km long and takes around 20 minutes. Dogs on leads are welcome and once you’ve taken in the views, you can stop at the Tower Barn for a hot drink. For a more challenging walk, park in nearby Broadway or Chipping Campden and take a walk up to the tower by which time you’ll definitely have earned a slice of cake!
Woodchester Park
Discover a magical woodland trail leading through the secluded valley of Woodchester Park. As you emerge from the woods you’ll encounter Welsh cattle and from here you’ll find the remains of an 18th century Victorian mansion, a chain of five lakes surrounded by woodland and an abundance of wildlife. During the summer months, at dusk you are often able to spot bats near the mansion, but in October, pheasants and maybe deer are more likely to be spotted.
The walk is around 3.5 miles and takes around 1.5 hours to complete. There is a car park available and toilets located at the mansion. Dogs on leads are welcome to walk the trail with you.
